This is very important part of Louisiana Creole culture and American History. This is especially important to me because I have creole lineage from New Orleans. I hope and pray that the Mardi Gras Indians tradition is kept alive.

New Orleans was founded in 1718. The first Africans were not brought until 1721. In that interim three years, the French enslaved Amerindian prisoners of war (mostly women). The first generation of Creoles of color born in New Orleans were all Afro-Amerindian people and New Orleans Creole culture is a result of those people's interactions with the French and Spanish and with the other Amerindian people of the area (Atakapa, Houma etc).
Creoles = Afro-Metis = indigenous.

The Tangipahoa and the Houma tribes, that's who. If you don't know or understand how native Americans and Africans united in New Orleans, shut up and learn something. Natives gave runaway slaves shelter and membership into their tribes through intermarrying, etc. This tradition is at least 200 years old.
