it's because when you've got cannons and bullets whizzing right over your head, the high frequency sound that usually follows after kinda makes you deaf for a few seconds. Your ears take too much "input" at once so they shut down temporarily. Ever had a friend yell as loud as they can right next to your ear? Or someone pop a balloon next to your ear? it's the same thing
