Dr. Subramanian Swamy is the President of the Janata Party and the former Union Minister for Commerce and Law between 1990 and 1991 in the Chandra Shekhar Cabinet.
"Strictly speaking I did not grow up in Madras. I was born in Madras and at the age of six months we moved to Delhi. My upbringing is in Delhi."
Dr. Subramanian Swamy said that he attended only one school -- Delhi Public School. He then went to Hindu College in Delhi University. After completing Mathematics Honors in Delhi University, he went to Calcutta, and then obtained a Masters degree from the Indian Statistical Institute. "I then went to Harvard and got my Ph.D. from there."
"My teachers motivated me to teach. At Harvard I was ahead of my class. In those days mathematics was in its infancy. I had attracted the attention of two very famous Nobel laureates - Paul. A Samuelson and Simon Kuznets. I became a joint author with Paul Samuelson and did my Ph.D. under Simon Kuznets. He was like a father figure to me, he insisted that I stay back and teach."
When asked about what triggered Dr. Swamy to return to India, he said,
"Essentially it was patriotism, not a very fashionable value, but I knew that in America however a good position I have, I am not one of them."
Speaking about his entrance into politics without a godfather, Dr. Swamy said, "It was difficult. The philosophy I have is 'If you do the right things, the path is not easy, but in the end god creates conditions by which you come up despite the opposition. That is what happened, the left wing was against me, I was thrown out of my job at IIT, and the communists did not like my ideology. They all ganged up and threw me out; the courts then re-instated me since it was illegal. They thought I would go back but I joined politics instead."
"Mrs. Gandhi got hold of my book, went on the floor and denounced me and that gave me instant fame. As a consequence Jan Sangh offered me a Rajya Sabha seat. That is how I entered politics. So no godfather but the circumstances threw me."
"I was elected from Bombay, Maharastra - at a time when the Shiv Sena was anti-Tamil. I was elected from a constituency that was a strong hold of Shiv Sena. I opposed Congress trade union leaders Raja Kulkarni and the second term I defeated Datta Samant, an absolute goonda who ruined the Bombay textile industry. The third term Mrs. Gandhi was assassinated and then everybody lost and I moved to Uttar Pradesh and then to Madurai."
