TPD Mourns the Loss of an Officer Killed in the Line of Duty
Corporal Mike Roberts
1971-2009

4,000 fellow law enforcement officers and members of our community paid their respects to Corporal Mike Roberts at his police funeral. Officers traveled from allover the country and even as far away as St Johns Newfoundland, Canada where Mike grew up. Thousands more watched the service live on TV. During the week after Cpl. Roberts death, countless citizens brought flowers, candles and notes to the Tampa Police Memorial in downtown Tampa and the roadside memorial on Nebraska Avenue where Cpl. Roberts was killed.

Cpl. Mike Roberts was doing something that every police officer has done a hundred times, something we call routine that turned out to be anything but. On August 19, 2009 at 9:58 p.m. Cpl. Roberts was patrolling Nebraska Avenue when he initiated a stop to check on a suspicious person. It quickly went from a violent struggle and short foot pursuit to a single gunshot that tragically ended his life. A K-9 Officer tracked down the suspect, Humberto Delgado Jr., who was hiding in a residential area. Delgado surrendered to police and was charged with Murder in the First Degree along with several other charges.

38-year-old Corporal Michael Roberts will be remembered as an outstanding officer, husband, father and member of the TPD family. He began his career with the Tampa Police Department in 1998. He served in Patrol until 2005 when he became a K-9 Officer. He served one year as a Field Training Officer and was promoted to the rank of Corporal on July 12th, 2009. Roberts was honored with a Life Saving Award in 2005. During his 11-year career, he was awarded dozens of Letters of Appreciation from citizens, supervisors and other law enforcement agencies. He served with the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife and 3-year-old son. He was a dedicated family man. Mike was known for his sense of humor and practical jokes that could make anyone smile. He was an avid sports fan and played goalie on a TPD Hockey Team.

I actually went to school with Humberto (the Killer). It's kind of crazy that he snapped like this and killed this cop.

  • I think from :43 to :48 .....I think that is Officer Curtis, who was killed in the line of duty last Tuesday with Officer Kocab. Also at 2:05 to 2:08.
