  • So colorful ...

He must have been a satisfied man since he play a tune like that ... :-)

  • Yeah, another cat that at one time I had a10year obsession with. It's the approach right, Same with Prez ,bird etc.Too many cats don't play like themselves. Here is a master in action.

Too many cats simply mimic, thats the problem with jazz today.Too many running coltraine embellishments that are simply repeated and punters can't tell.

Longtall is giving you truth, but the kids coming up today, well most of them simply don't get it.

Longtall a true artist god bless him.

  • Dex stands alone! What a sound!

  • @margaretsville Yeah

  • Looks like late 70s Dexter.....Fantastic! George Cables on piano?

  • @gsco82 Well you know what they say about opinions...lol

  • He is my favorite Tenor man,he rocks, cool,

  • @RFranklinCarter Thanks, found "Tanya" on on a 2004 Blue Note release on CD with possibly the same name ( the liner notes arn't very clear on that )as the original LP "One Flight Up" from tunes recorded June 2, 62, in Paris. Tracks 1-3, including "Tanya" were originally issued as BST 84176. That version is 18min/15secs (same on CD) & takes up one whole side of the original LP, & it's pure creativity all the way. I remember reading somewhere that Gordon recorded it at some point in S.F.

  • @DickWhittington1000 I am fairly certain that this performance appears on a DVD called Dexter Gordon: Live in San Francisco. The release date is 1979, but I don't know if 1979 is also the date that the show was recorded. You can find the DVD on Amazon.

  • All these young punks on MTV who think they're cool need to see this and listen to it with an open mind, then they'd know what cool and having talent is all about. This is my favorite Dexter recording, but I'm not sure this was taken from the same broadcaste I saw on TV in 1973. When it comes to any kind of sax, Charlie Parker and Dexter Gorden RULE!
