When I taught Kindergarten, I would always pause the tape at the end of the "cellar" song, then I would tell the class that there was now a "problem", and ask the children if they could tell me the answer.

They could, but then where would they go? The more modern power shovels were taking over the industry so they wouldn't be able to find work. It was just by chance that they were able to get that last job. It would make sense for Mary Ann to be the furnace and Mike to be the maintenance man, that way they had good jobs and were wanted and appreciated.

this was my favorite story as a child growing up in the 70's. I never knew they made an illustrated movie out of the book. Such a nice story :)
