Silage Video 3..Sealing pit with straw bales

Covered silage pit with plastic sheeting and weighed it down with large barley straw bales.
Lost about a cupful of diesel after handle for turning it off jammed.

If there is one job i hate doing its covering the silage pit.

Last year i had to cover and uncover our big pit 6 times before it was full because of rain and with it is not being roofed it had to be covered with tyres as well each time

do you drive over the plastic while putting the bales on? Dont you puncture it? I always put dirt on the pit, covers it really well. And with a excavator it's a easy job.

Yes i do. Only a few holes , If i puncture the plastic it's no big deal as it is under a roof and those big bales cover up any holes. Do you put the dirt on top of plastic sheeting ? Any problems with that dirt getting into the silage wagon during the winter ?

we use tyres do you use tyres on the outside clamp? Oh yeh i think youtube is made for people like you showing what farming is all about.I know its not the easiest of jobs.

That's what i was doing today - Piling a mountain of tyres on top of outside clamp

I agree with your comment on YT . There are a lot of video's on YT that tell lies about farming and are very negative so i hope mine shows townies what really happens on a farm

U think thats bad we cut silage for other farmers around our area and altogether we have 12 customers and we have to seal all their silage pits twice they all put in second cuts. And my uncle doesnt charge them for it. All that work for nothin. Id say you were pissed off havin to cover the same pit six times it would piss me off.

If there is one thing i hate more than covering a silage pit,....... it is re-covering it for the second cut!
