We take a first drive of the new BMW 5 Series Touring to find out how it stacks up to its German rivals.

Slightly bigger than before and packed with lots of clever features the new BMW 5 Series Touring is designed to take on the Mercedes E Class Estate and Audi A6 Avant.

Key features on the new 5 Series Touring include an opening glass rear screen, an automatic luggage cover which retracts when you open the boot and rear seats which can be lowered at the pull of a lever in the boot and can also be spilt 40:20:40 for added practicality.

The BMW 5 Series Touring's total available boot space is 1670-litres - that's up 60-litre on the old 5car. And while this still be may be 280-litres down on the Mercedes E Class Estate, the BMW pulls back some ground with its superior driving experience.

The 5 Series Turing is fast, comfy, refined, and when the road gets twisty, good fun too. And if you go for the 520d, which can do 54mpg, it's cheap to run too.

  • Hound419 why ruin BMW,s nice suspension set up with some ugly loooking 19 inch wheels? all to many people makes their car drive worse with to big wheels. Unless you planning to join the touring car championship with your estate. Regards

  • I prefer the Benz, it's better at what a wagon is supposed to do, plus it's cheaper and you will stand out in the Business parking lot

  • Great review, great car.

  • Just bought one, great car

  • I just ordered a 530i touring with 19 inch wheels, I'll have it in three months!

  • Best reviewer at his best - sadly he is not in a car that matches his standard

  • Damn, BMW needs to bring the 5-series wagon back to the U.S. The GT just doesn't cut it.

  • @DulferCarter Right :))

  • TDI is better any day
