WOW:<
I have never eperienced this scene with such drama and eletric current that is running throught it.
I don't much (sadly) of Ashley Putnam, and why haven't we seen more of her in UK?
Marisa Galvany is also amazing.

Galvany, Galvany, Galvany!!!!!!! And B R A V A PUTNAM!!! She deserves more attention!

The only interest I have in this is, as another viewer stated, the production & costumes/set are the same as Beverly Sills' earlier 70's s NYCO Stuarda. This is from '81. Sills was retired and was manager of the NYCO; no doubt being very involved in this. I don't care for Putnam & Galvany and the singing of this scene was very boring and more like a straight play.

Indeed, the timbre is a little similar.

What a monumental lash-up this is! lacking dynamics and wandering over the place with the tempo and finding its way back again by accident. Bravo to the singers here for managing to cope with it so well. I should think the lasting impression of this performance was the sound of Donizetti turning in his grave

MARISA GALVANY: UNA GRANDE!!!.

Where is this in the opera? Act 1 finale? Act 2 finale?

Exactly...for Maria Stuarda (an opera that is unfortunately not performed in the US and is unpopular) the two queens have to be sung with great power and drama and have to look like powerful rivals...this scene such a pack a punch when done right

This is not a bad staging, it is no staging at all. But the musical side is worse. What a pity, with such singing actresses at their disposal, that nobody on the musical staff of the NYCO bothered to compare editions and sources, or that matter, even to do what's written. Wrong rhythms, wrong dynamics, wrong phrasing. Donizetti was always very clear about what he wanted. Take a look at the score.

is there anyone like me that thinks Galvany's dark voice sounds a little like Astrid Vanay?
Although no known footage of Sills in "Maria Stuarda" exists, this is the next best thing. These excerpts are from a 1981 NYCO production using the same sets and costumes that Sills performed in, and it preserves the intense performance of Elizabeth I by Marisa Galvany, who often appeared with Sills in the production

Here Ashley Putnam sings Maria, with Marisa Galvany as Queen Elizabeth I, Barry McCauley as Leicester and William Justus as Talbot.
