Very nice effort. Looks very good, but i expected it to be good since you made it Ryan

Cool effect with a great result. The method you describe is almost the same I used to do an After Effects planet blow-up video I've uploaded here (minus the whole NASA images thing). I suppose that great minds work similar. ;-)

hey very nice any chance of a tutorial for this?

I have two things to say. One, this is pure awesomeness. And two, i would not make the planet spin as fast. Just me saying, but you don't have to listen to me.

Nah, I agree with that too, actually. As this was a test, I wanted to rotate the planet as much as I thought I could ever need to in 1 shot; the most extreme example. When I used this setup in an actual shot, it was more subtle.

Yeah... To be honest, I had no idea Andrew Kramer made a planet tutorial. ...and I still have not bothered to go look. Kids, you don't need a tutorial for everything. Explore the tools and functionality of your application and challenge yourself to think of interesting ways to use them.

Looks good! You forgot that you wouldn't see the stars though. ;-)

You actually shouldn't see the dark side of the planet either, realistically ;) But uh, the compression was weird when uploading this, the gamma came way up. I generally prefer the stars to be pretty dim, the dark side of the planet to be pretty moody. So this whole thing actually looks brighter than I'd like. But it's just a test.
