The Japanese slaughtered 600,000 to 1,000,000 unarmed men, women, and children at Nanking alone. They refuse to acknowledge it to this day and do not teach it in their schools. The Japanese killed their own civilians on Okinawa rather than let them surrender to the Americans.
Who is going to make a manga cartoon of that?

Honestly, Keiji Nakazawa's intent for creating the work was to promote peace! It was not to say the Japanese were victimized or that Americans are evil. He was trying to show how in war, everyone suffers! And I am quoting his author's note: "I hope that Gen's story conveys to its readers the preciousness of peace and the courage we need to live strongly, yet peacefully." It is NOT victimizing Japan. It is war that is being ridiculed!
