I do not own this. Lyrics to this studio version of Salt of the Earth, the closing track on the Stones' Beggars Banquet:

Let's drink to the hard working people
Let's drink to the lowly of birth
Raise your glass to the good and the evil
Let's drink to the salt of the earth

Say a prayer for the common foot soldier
Spare a thought for his back breaking work
Say a prayer for his wife and his children
Who burn the fires and who still till the earth

And when I search a faceless crowd
A swirling mass of gray and black and white
They don't look real to me
In fact, they look so strange

Raise your glass to the hard working people
Let's drink to the uncounted heads
Let's think of the wavering millions
Who need leading but get gamblers instead

Spare a thought for the stay-at-home voter
His empty eyes gaze at strange beauty shows
And a parade of the gray suited grafters
A choice of cancer or polio

And when I look in the faceless crowd
A swirling mass of grays and black and white
They don't look real to me
Or don't they look so strange

Let's drink to the hard working people
Let's think of the lowly of birth
Spare a thought for the rag taggy people
Let's drink to the salt of the earth

Let's drink to the hard working people
Let's drink to the salt of the earth
Let's drink to the two thousand million
Let's think of the humble of birth

  • Keiths voice needs to be heard by all, it's beautiful.

  • The "two thousand million" has become "six thousand million" in little more than 40 years - which is as scary as anything the Stones every recorded.

  • @RoboSlater People love to gossip and assume, but the real reason the Circus wasn't released right away was because they had legal tangles. They didn't settle the legal tangles right away because they didn't think their own performances were good enough as they had gotten very little sleep setting everything up then performing. When a lot of fans were bickering about it they went back and decided it was actually pretty good and settled the legal issues and got it released.

  • great song

  • @nonirockify I think that the who had a better performance, however the stones weren`t terribly bad, though most of brian jones`s guitar is mixed out.

  • @OroborusFMA Just what I was gonna write until I saw your comment. Actually its now reached the 7 billion mark! In 5 months LOL- that's a whole lot of mogambo!

  • @RoboSlater Bullshit they were upstaged - it was a 3 day drug fuelled orgy of drugs (and presumably sex) The Stones hold their own - they are the 'ringmasters). The other versions show their affinity for their blue collar roots. Don't know how you could harass them over this one, sorry but I disagree

  • Listen and chill

  • @RoboSlater Wasn't the song "Connection" somewhere before "SOTE?"

  • Thanks for adding the lyrics !...

  • "they get gamblers instead"-politicians!
