CRAZY PIANO TRANSCRIPTION!.For sure, many know Ravel's orchestration of Mussgorsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition', but few will be able to imagine hearing the orchestral version again after listening to Horowitz take command of this piece.Vladimir Horowitz applied a similar outlook to his own adaptation that was clearly attuned to project his fabulous technical wizardry. In his legendary hands, the culmination at the great gate of Kiev ends in a rolling chords, glittery descant accents and tremelos, all managing to suggest a full range of orchestral effects through the unadulterated sound and resources of the keyboard.

  • He considered Mussorgsky's original immensely introverted, and in many ways he was right. "They say I put graffiti on Mussorgsky," he said. "Well I don't give a damn! I worked hard on that transcription, and am proud of it! Ravel orchestrated it, and I pianostrated it!"

  • Thanks again Felippeo85 for posting this video

  • @LambChowder1 Similar to the character trait - lacking in expressiveness, reserved, restrained. It has to do with the 'color' of the music. It can be the difference of one interpretation that may be executed flawlessly and sound good...nice, yet lacks any drama and may sound a bit bland. In contrast, a musician can play a piece that fully expresses strong feelings and deep emotion. The human quality of the music comes out so that the performance is like an event or a well-told a story.

  • @JupiterIV what does introverted mean in music

  • @dalecampbl9 This is best answered by making a comparison between Mussorgsky's original and Horowitz' transcription.

  • @JupiterIV what does it mean to be "immensely introverted"?

  • haunting

  • No this certainly is a transcription. More parts added than in original. In certain sections of the work, Ravel didn't add any additional parts hence, in Horowitz's transcripton we don't hear any difference whatsoever.

  • yeah, you're right. It think the word he ment was "interpretation".

because the dynamics wich are usually taken, are very different!
