I'm 24 and Tuesday is my ship date for boot camp, and tonight really being the last night with family and friends kinda has me feeling a little anxious and overwhelmed. I spent many hours wondering whether my decision to join the Navy was a good choice in my life. I just have to trust in the Lord to take care of me.

Dear sir, I'm offended that you referred to my son as a "classic shitbag recruit." He got through boot camp with flying colors and went on to score well in Arabic at the Defense Language Institute.
I appreciate your service, but not the undue criticism you gave my son. As a sailor back in the early 70s, I was taught to respect the Corps, and indeed I do.

@HappyRoadCone. I know may be confusing to some readers, but I am the owner of this YouTube account and the young sailor in the video is my son. He wrapped up his six year enlistment almost two years ago now, and is well on his way through college on the GI bill. He was a great sailor and is an outstanding young man. The Navy was good for him, and me, as I served from 1971 to 1975, stationed aboard the USS Conserver (ARS-39) home ported in Pearl Harbor.

@lolchango Everyone handles stress differently, bro. Someone people (like myself) are absolutely blown away by someone yelling at them; tack on sleep deprivation, family separation, and daily performance related stress and presto - you have A LOT of stress. If this young Sailor found strength in Jesus Christ (praise God) then good on him. I really doubt he's a "shitbag recruit." He sounds like a normal kid to me. Congrats on your hard work, Sailor. -Petty Officer Knippel

I ignore the sarcastic mocking comments here - Odomor, I thank God for your sons' candidness, honesty and his testimony for Christ. If more people in the defense forces opened up to God as your son has the military would make WISER decisions & Gods favour would be upon our nations. For those that continue to mock - re the 'shitbag' comment - there comes a day and time of reckoning in everyone's life when we cant save ourselves EVEN the defense forces. His too, will come. I hope he finds Jesus.

@btodalew9890 Best of luck. CTI is a lot of work but I'm sure it's rewarding. DLI in Monterey is a great place to go to "A" school. I visited my son there several times and we both loved it.
My son got out of the Navy at the completion of his six year enlistment. He's now majoring in Applied Linguistics at Georgia State in Atlanta.

@odnomor wow! I'm going CTI as well! Awesome, maybe I'll get to work with your son one day...

Congratulations and thank you for your service. God is great!!! I left for Navy Boot Camp two days after I turned 18. It was very tough at first. I wanted to go home so bad. I was young and fresh out of high school. But God was with me every step of the way and I could feel his presence through all the hard times. All praise to Him!!!!

Hey fellow Christian Sailor thanks for the testimony.

It's not mandatory, but the chapelins do more then just preach. Sometimes you might be stuck listening to a human rights lecture, or somthing. And ofcourse they will sometimes talk about God during. But they don't mean any harm by it.
Is participation in religious activities mandatory?

Thanks for visiting my YouTube page. I'm pretty sure it would be against the law for the Navy to force a recruit to attend any religious service. When I was in the Navy over 38 years ago, I think I only attended one chapel service. My son, as you saw in the video, attended every time he could. You may find that you would find comfort in attending such a service. It's totally up to you.
