@clamcrabber Probably not a good idea if you're the cautious type. Personally, I'm not afraid of black bears. If I were in the Sierra, Alaska or somewhere that bears are known to be aggressive it would be a diff story, but in most places black bears are afraid of humans and sleeping with my food is my way of protecting it. Snakes, coyote, wolves, cougar, bear... these are all the bogeymen of the backcountry. Rarely seen, rarely dangerous, widely feared. I don't spend much time thinking about em.

Good demonstration while the rain is cooperating but just a tarp can leave one regretting leaving the tent behind. Small rain such as this is managable but long, hard rain will cause a problem. A well sealed tent with pee bottle is the way to go. Great emergency or fair weather shelters though.
Dude your 3 sides of nylon material away from having a tent. It makes no sense, I can't imagine all the critters bothering you all night. Ticks = lyme disease etc. racoons looking for food. You can't tell me an additional pound will just be too overwhelming to carry.

@kogamiyata69 An extra pound would not be too overwhelming to carry, but I don't see any benefit in doing so. My tarp weighs 13 ounces and it's twice as roomy as the lightest tents, which weigh about 3 pounds. I've hiked thousands of miles with a tarp and never had a problem with critters, weather or anything else. I enjoy tarp camping and don't consider it to be a sacrifice. If there was a tent that was just as comfortable and lightweight I'd consider it... but so far I haven't found one.

@blackwoodspress Big Agnes fly creek UL2, is the lightest 2 man free standing shelter in the world. Its what i use and weighs about 2.3 pounds and is set up easier then a tarp in my mind. The only thing i dont absoulutley love about the tent is that its pack size isnt tiny, it still packs very small but it isnt as small as a rolled up tarp. Its 2 person shelter so im guessing its as roomy as your tarp setup but im not sure, i sleep in it alone and its massive to me 6'1 190.

@sdkkrew The Big Agnes Fly Creek UL is a nice tent. I tried the one-person version of that tent and found it too small for me personally (my head and feet touched the ends), but it's still a very cool shelter.

wouldn't you just get soaked if it was windy and the wind switched?
stevensartifacts 10 months ago
@stevensartifacts It's possible, but I've never really had that happen. If the wind did switch and start blowing rain in the font I would probably rig up my rain jacket or some of my extra gear at the entrance to block it, and scoot further down toward the other end. Since my tarp measures 8'x10' there is quite a bit of room for hiking out from the weather underneath.
