Avalon (2001) Mamoru Oshii

Synopsis: In a near future, young people are increasingly becoming addicted to an illegal (and potentially deadly) battle simulation game called Avalon. When Ash, a star player, hears of rumors that a more advanced level of the game exists somewhere, she gives up her loner ways and joins a gang of explorers.

In this scene, Ash finds the gateway to the next level. There, she realizes
this fiction could be more real than reality...

I love the way sepia-toned image change to a lived color in Class Real.

  • The problem with this movie is that the Polish dialoge doesn't make sense! It was translated directly (word-for-word) from the Japanese, without understanding the subject matter.I am Polish, and I only could appreciate this movie after I watched the Japanese-dubbed version (honestly, better voice acting than in the original Polish) with English subtitles (which seem to have been based on the original Japanese script and MAKE A LOT OF SENSE).

  • great remark! The first time i saw this movie was in spanish, and the translation was very poor too. I wish i could see the japanese version soon!

  • Well, I am not sure you understand: I mean the original Polish dialoge is a bad translation of the Japanese script. But I watched the movie with English subtitles, which were the translation of the Japanese dubbing. The Spanish translation could have been based on the Polish original. Perhaps you should find a different Spanish translation, based on the Japanese dubbing, like I did with the English subtitles! It's just a matter of finding the right subtitles / DVD edition.

  • Yeah, I´ve understood you very well, I said I want to see the japanese version ´cause i doubt there were a version with spanish subtitles translated from the japanese dubbing. All I´ve found are dubbed from the original version, even in the DVD.

  • the ending of this very good movie has driven me crazy its a very symbolic film

  • @symbolt well the german version wich wasnt subtitled instead synchrosised istn much better because the voice of the mainactress is very silent. And there wasnt much dialogue as well, but the movie and its deepness especialy the art of the colors and slo mo effects are brilliant.

  • What I am saying is that the English subs are fine, so you are not missing out :) The English subs are based on the original Japanese script, so there should be nothing wrong with them. It is the Polish script (what the actors are saying) that's gibberish due to mistranslations from Japanese. However, the Japanese voice acting (i.e. the Japanese dub) is a lot better, so I recommend watching the movie with Japanese audio and English subtitles. That's the way to go ;)

  • So, are you saying there are different english scripts/subtitles on different versions of the movie?

If I'm watching the blu-ray with polish audio and english subs...am I missing out?

  • Went through the the message boards on IMDB. There was no thread on it. Could say which site to download it from?

  • The location to the "cool Avalon screensaver" is given on imdb, in the message board, there is a topic with the link that will enable you to download it...

  • That's strange! Maybe you could try the English subtitles. The ones I watched were simply English subtitles from the American DVD release of the movie.
