Yes and no. The places in New Zealand were chosen to match Tolkien's descriptions and drawings, which were inspired by places in England mostly. So I don't think it's fair to say Middle Earth is in New Zealand, after all there's a place not too far from my house that could easily be Mirkwood. I believe that Middle Earth exists wherever there are Tolkien fans, not just wherever there are epic landscapes.

Wow! That was cool. Middle Earth is definitely in New Zealand. I don't think there is any other place on this planet that can beat the beautiful landscapes and sceneries of New Zealand. Hawaii, forget it, not even close.

No doubt many locations might match the world that Tolkien envisioned. We've been to the UK many times and agree, truly that was the spark for Tolkien's inspiration. However we believe what we were trying to convey ultimately is that New Zealand offered the most perfect combination of varied natural landscapes to provide the backdrop for all the scenes that were required to re-create that world.
And hey, lucky for Peter Jackson, that's his home! ;-)
Best,
