For many of the worlds endangered species it is too late. Either the gene pool is too small, or their habitat is so far gone that those bred in captivity can never be released back into the wild.

There is one species of animal, which confronts both of these predicaments: the Orang-utan. Its habitat has been devastated by humanity. So much so that only two small viable pockets remain in the wild.

In JUST HANGING ON, we travel to the island of Kalimantan in Indonesia, joining the worlds largest Orang-utan rehabilitation project to see first hand the battle they face trying to stop the extinction of this species. We also travel to what is left of the islands pristine rain forest and see stunning pictures of totally wild Orang-utans in their natural habitat.

The documentary contains the only film available of an orang-utan giving birth.

  • Poor little guys. Bless all hearts the little hearts -- orangutan and human.

  • One day, we will use all of our resources to the point of our own extinction. Then we will truly understand what devastation we have caused to ourselves, our world and the animals.

  • Its heartbreaking seeing the poor little babies! When will humans learn to look after Earth and its precious wildlife? Thank you for sharing this!

  • @Huliojohnson That's a possibility, given that most every species t0 pass this way have gone extinct. Earth does that. But, could (would) Humans kill each other off to the last? Hm-m-m-m. Speaking strictly for me.....no matter how bad a day I (Human) might be having, I would never wipe out all Humanity, given opportunity. There are just so many truly genuine, good Humans out there. If only for them.

  • @aliveinsd its probably that humanity will be wiped out by humanity itself

  • Why not start a sanctuary in Florida?

  • Very true!

If some of the other comments I have read on yhis series are indicitive, the generations coming up will be NO help to stop the destruction!

  • Humans' large brain and super-survival instinct means that we shall go on, and continue to evolve forever. Of course an asteroid could wipe us out first....but you know, we are working on the scenario, too. We are the first Earth species to be able to sense and to possibly correct disaster coming from the skies. We aren't perfect, true. But we do continue to try to be better than we are. Such behavior is exclusive to Humans.
