Lauren Lappin, a center for the US Olympics Softball Team, and her athletic trainer Brandon Marcello, teach the hip rotation drills baseball workout. ""I think it all goes down to sequence, and if you can put the proper sequence and putting the proper emphasis on what the individuals need, I think thats where success in games are made the most. You know, one exercise which the girls actually cant stand is what we call the Evil Blue Pad. It was a blue pad, but now theyve dubbed it Evil Blue Pad. Its where they stand on it. Its about a six-inch thick pad and they do hip rotations, so theyre working on keeping a nice wide base which is where theyre gonna have to [pull out] on defense. You know, they perform in that base as far as fielding, as far as throwing, as far as hitting, so everything is working out of that base and they do quick fast explosive rotations with their hip trying to keep their core nice and stable, rotating about the hip, trying to go as quick and fast as possible. Well, the coachs work is making sure of one thing: youre staying as stable as possible with your core, keeping everything locked in through this area here, making sure your abs are nice and tight or braces if somebody was about to punch you, that youll get the stability in the low back and hips. Additionally, you wanna make sure again theyre maintaining that base. As they do the exercise, what theyll find out is their feet start to move closer and closer and closer together, which is not advantageous for a softball player. We never wanna work out of our feet being together. We work at a nice solid base, hitting, fielding like I said before, so making sure they keep their feet apart, making sure they keep their knees inside their toes and they keep the weight on the inside balls of the foot is really gonna be key through that time.""
