The work at a Synod is divided between the general congregations and the linguistic working groups. The small group meetings -- with approximately 20 people -- enable the review of the issues discussed during the general congregations, as well as the preparation of propositions which will then be presented to all the fathers at the general congregations. We talked about the first part of the Synod, about the reports that we heard, and we discussed how the general orientation that was given during the reports applies to specific situations in the different African countries. We also discussed certain aspects that we believe were not sufficiently underlined and we wished to emphasize them.During the past few days, the twelve working groups have gathered together to improve the proposals that were elaborated last week: practical solutions that concern real problems.Apart from the theoretical, theological, and philosophical considerations, we descended -- as pastors -- to the reality of our people. The problem of justice in society, as well as in the Church, whether it concerns the youth that is manipulated, womens rights, or the role of political leaders, who must be supported and evangelized in order to be effective at the service of the common good. Hence, it was not the theory, but concrete matters that concerned the Synod Fathers and that we addressed in a very precise way in the working groups.
