Agdam is a completely destroyed Azeri town located on the territory of Azerbaijan east of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast. In the Nagorno-Karabakh War Agdam was used by the Azeri side as a base for launching artillery attacks against Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenian forces occupied Agdam in July 1993. During the following weeks the town was systematically looted and burned down. The UN Security Council condemned the occupation of Agdam soon after it took place. The government of Nagorno-Karabakh has incorporated Agdam and the surrounding area into the republic as a security zone. Before the war Agdam had about 30 000 inhabitants.
