I, along with about 50 other teachers from around Southern Oregon, am part of a Teaching American History grant. At one of our recent professional development sessions we were assigned the task of writing a rap to go along with a couple of primary source documents that we were randomly assigned. While I enjoy writing songs, the stress of the moment didn't work well for my mental focus.
I went home that night and spent a couple of hours writing what I suppose would be called a parody of Eminem and Dr. Dre's song "I Need A Doctor" with the lyric representing the perspective of a colonial rum maker responding to Great Britain's Sugar Act. I had some technical difficulties, so I had to use the computer's built-in microphone rather than my nice mic, but the finished recording was acceptable.
I emailed the song to my friend Greg, who is also part of the history grant, and he felt inspired to create a video to go along with the song. I love collaboration! It is such an amazing way to see that talents of others amplify our own ability to demonstrate what we know and can do.
