Ian McKellan visits a Hobart Elementary School class and shares his love of Shakespeare with the children. The actor and preteens exchange dramatic verses of Hamlet in the following scene from THE HOBART SHAKESPEAREANS, a charming portrayal of an exceptional teacher and his eager students who together, touchingly demonstrate the power of education. With genuine passion, Rafe Esquith turns underprivileged and at risk youth of central Los Angeles on to the wonders of Shakespeare. Academy Award®-nominated director Mel Stuart (Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory) skillfully explores the secrets of Esquith's winning strategy in this uplifting tribute.

  • I am teary-eyed, viewing this. Those who are truly great, will share of themselves, even with these little ones. I was touched from the moment Sir Ian entered the classroom, and it was a toss-up as to who was more excited, he or these children. Thanks to the poster for sharing this!

  • Little girl in red, in the front row, at 1:19.

  • Anyone reading shakespeare is impressive but these kids are something else.

  • I look baby in this video

  • @webeffect I don't think they're necessarily sunglasses, I think it's those auto-adjust ones.

  • Why is he wearing sunglasses indoors? How rude

  • that was my tracher in 2nd grade know im in room 52

  • the secret about the success of this school is that around third grade the teachers get really strict. if u missed a day the school would call home and ask why u are absent. during recess you were to be at ur designated sport for the sport for week there was more but i still dont regret going to that school to bad i moved and never graduated from there

  • Does Rafe travel around the country giving lectures on occasion, does anybody know? I just read his book, "Teach like your hairs on fire," and was blown away. I've adopted many of his principles with my own 11 year old when he's at home. (I'm not a school teacher.) Wonderful guy. Incredibly inspiring.

I've always enjoyed Ian's work in movies, and now my respect for him as a humanitarian has skyrocketed.

  • this is my school and my kindergarten teacher is their she is the blond behind the guy that looks like magneto i think its him

  • Rafe Esquith is a huge inspiration.

  • Wow, Magneto's gettin old. I think it's his short hair that makes it more obvious, but I never realized how much you could tell.

This is touching, you can tell he's really enjoying talking to the kids and stuff.
