A HF net is certainly not the place to call Mayday.

But, the following calls may be made only by the vessel in distress or the responding authority: Seelonce Mayday or Seelonce Distress (typically repeated three times) means that the channel may only be used by the vessel in distress and the coastguard (and any other vessels they ask for assistance in handling the emergency). The channel may not be used for normal working traffic until 'seelonce feenee' is broadcast.

  • If you can't hear him, don't transmit over and over. JMO.

  • I am assuming the distress involved a ship at sea. If so, Amateur Radio is NOT the way to communicate in an emergency.

The system to use is called GMDSS - the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System. GMDSS enables ANY vessel to get a Distress Alert ashore to a Maritime Rescue Coordination Center, from ANYWHERE at sea, in THIRTY SECONDS. At the touch of two buttons on an Inmarsat-C terminal.

Any person who goes to sea without GMDSS deserves what happens to him.

  • How come you did not answer his mayday?

  • I bet the rig on the video is ICOM 77 Profesional Radio Transceiver ... can U conferm ,..

  • @hjjfffaa mayday is a proword

  • @hjjfffaa i.e. please don't keep sending "Mayday" as it confuses other stations listening in for emergency traffic. In this instance, with poor signal conditions, only the station in distress should use the prosign 'mayday'.

  • @hjjfffaa A proword is short for procedure word, or phrase. MAYDAY is the proword for an emergency. OVER is a proword to signify that you've ended transmission and expect a reply, OUT is a proword to signify that you're ending transmission and a reply is not needed or requested. ROGER or AFFIRMATIVE is a proword signifying that you understand, and or copied the last transmission clearly. He was asking him to stop saying MAYDAY on the air because it would cause problems with others listening.

  • Pro word?
