I don't actually know that much about rhythmic gymnastics, I just know what I enjoy watching, and I always enjoy Pang Qiong's hoop exercise from the 1988 Olympic All-Around with her great presentation and wonderful use of the apparatus.

This was the first Olympic Games that China qualified rhythmic gymnasts to and Pang was their highest finisher placing 11th in the all-around, she received a 9.700 for this routine. She never achieved any medals on the world or Olympic stage but she won a bronze medal at the 1991 World University Games for her clubs exercise. Pang is now a one of the head rhythmic gymnastics coaches in China.

I always feel that rhythmic gymnasts in the 80s and early 90s had a much better range of movement with the apparatus than gymnasts today - they weren't so obsessed with hyperflexibility and focussed on mastering the apparatus instead of being bendy while holding it. This is the main reason I would much rather watch older rhythmic gymnastics competitions than todays meets.

  • Whoa, she moves like a sorceress. I bet she could totally stop a gang of bank robbers with that plastic hoop and few shimmers from her sequins. Neat clip, and anyone who does a butterfly is good people in my book.

  • ITA with your sidebar comments. RG today is nothing but hyperbendy anorexic aliens. Gross. I much prefer RG like this and Lori Fung.

  • Love it!

  • good, but nothing special - no emotion, no passion for her routine

  • you know what I like, in artistic gymnastics, china has the best gymnasts and russia is like one of the worst. and in rhythmic, russia has the best aand china only has some really good rhythmic gymnasts, like Pang Qiong.

  • because we learn on how to control the hoop and throw it in the right spot

  • i love the end!^^

  • that was like a magic trick but with a hoop i love it

  • that was so good! she has a lot of stuff that i've never seen before. truly unique.

  • No wonder she has such a beautiful leotard. RG always has better ones.

Well, she definitely isn't as flexible as the modern gymnasts. I love their flexibility, but she is beautiful.

That has to be the longest I've seen anyone go without touching her apparatus. How do they know where it is going to go?!

  • Totally agree! The apparatus mastery is so much better to watch than the freak show flexibility. She is incredible- I could watch this video 5 times and still miss things, she is that good with thehoop!
