How in the world does he keep the bike glued to the track? With my starts I'm bouncing all over the place.

No, the dead patch is just that--a dead patch. The bobbing is utilization of the hips to both drive through and quickly reset for the other leg coming up.

Why is he bobbing at the beginning? Is that to get more power through the dead patch of the stroke?
