He was elected using flowery, emotionally-loaded, falacious speech, accusing any unpopular laws and supporting any popular laws, telling each individual only what they wanted to hear (even though it may contradict what he says at a different time), and getting an extremely large vote percentage from the African American populations. About 95%of voting blacks voted for Obama, so there was definitely some race-based judgement (racism) involved.
There was probably some demagoguery there, too.
