@123torrent In the grand scheme of things, was anyone hurt by what occurred at the Gator Bowl in 1979? Answer: No. The player he hit said he didn't even feel it. Sure, it was wrong of him to have done what he did, but to say he was a "slime" or a "piece of Garbage" is a bit overboard. Here was a coach that was earning $43,000 when he was fired when, based on his great record, could have earned far more. He instead gave raises to his assistant coaches. You think that's a slime, huh?

In 1986, the President of Ohio State University asked Woody to deliver the Commencement Address. Woody said that that was the greatest experience of his life.

People who badmouth Woody did not know him. Those of us who *did* know Woody, loved him-warts & all.

The two things that are always in a good home is number one: the kid is wanted. He knows that long before he can toddle. Number two: there’s discipline in that home. And discipline always implies disciples. He believes in those who took care of him and started to guide him. Those two things are always there and I look for them.

He has to be team oriented and usually he comes from a good home. He comes from a home that has respected him as a youngster. And he’s learned to have self-esteem because he was esteemed in that home. And we find that once a youngster learned self esteem he can pass it along to other people. You can’t respect somebody else until you’ve learned to respect yourself.
What a great man! A true revolutionary in terms of race relations in college football. I once heard John Hicks say that he'd "Die and go to hell for that guy" (Woody Hayes).

Right you are! When I was an undergrad at Ohio State,my academic advisor was a black gentleman named Ray Hamilton who played for Woody clear back in 1951. Woody was WAY ahead of the curve in civil rights.
