Historian Philip Dray examines the Reconstruction era though the political lives of the first African American Congressmen in his book, "Capitol Men." Mr. Dray presents the racial prejudice that the sixteen representatives faced while in office, the many issues they advocated for throughout their tenures, and the demise of Reconstruction and the beginning of Jim Crow laws. Philip Dray discusses his book with Peniel Joseph, Afro-American Studies professor at Brandeis University and author of "Waiting 'Til the Midnight Hour: A Narrative History of Black Power in America."
This book is FASCINATING. For everyone involved in and/or interested in politics, American history and Black history, this book is a MUST READ. I would even suggest it be required or strongly suggested reading in high school.
