Do you remember your 5th birthday? Not many of us do unless your clever Dad filmed the occasion with sound!
Celebrating your birthday with a party is a relatively new tradition. In the distant past, people did not record the exact date of a birth so the day could not be celebrated even if they wanted to.
What is fairly certain is that in pre-Christian times it was thought that individuals were more vulnerable to attack from evil spirits on their 'birth day'. So to drive away the evil spirits everyone gathered together to celebrate the occasion with much laughter and happiness.
The song 'Happy Birthday to You' was written in 1893 by two American teachers, Mildred J. Hill and Dr Patty Smith Hill. The original lyrics were 'Good Morning to You'.
In 1988 the rights of the song were sold to Warner Communications for an estimated $25 million. The birthday tradition is now celebrated around the world with customs as varied as our cultures.
