Whale watching from seakayaks off the north eastern coast of the Coromandel in New Zealand. In early Spring Bex and I found a baleen whale (maybe a Bryde's whale?) feeding in close to the shore in shallow water right above the reef!
We had being doing rat control lines in the forest when we noticed - a lot of fish activity and some orcas feeding, we also could see this baleen whale in a fairly static location, so we decided to kayak out and investigate. It was right on dusk with beautiful light and although we only saw the orcas at a distance, the time spent with this big guy was simply wonderful! ~ Jon Traylen
It has been suggested (Alex Simpson) that it probably a Bryde's whale
