Arabian-percheron 3YO. practices his canter pulling a training cart in an uneven grass field. After standing and a bit of trot, he begins a nice canter to voice command.
This youngster is very well-balanced and has a wonderful natural self-carriage, as seen in the way he stretches his neck out and down and pushes off well from his hind end. He's pulling a very light weight on level ground, on a loose rein without use of the whip, yet even so he is collecting himself. He maintains this frame also through the trot.
Though pleasure driving at speed is most commonly done at a trot, canter training is a good idea to prepare the horse for the feel and sounds of cantering when it does happen out on the road or trail, whether purposely or due to a fright.
