This is part 1 of my "Creating a Comic Book Page" tutorial video. The video details my work process in creating the artwork (layouts, pencils, and inks) for the "Colossus" story published in "Origins of Marvel Comics: X-Men #1".

Do you know any good sources on the net that teach how to layout a story? I'm not curtain on how to break that up onto pages. I tend to draw to much detail of what I wrote and I'm sure no ones to read a phonebook sized book. Great vids!

@phongbong Not really sure of online resources, but when you are laying something out and trying to be concise you have to note the key shots in your scene. Ask yourself questions like: Which panels are the best for telling the story? Which panels deliver the most information I want to tell in the most effective way possible? Which panels are not absolutely necessary? Can I combine these panels together? Remember your #1 job as an artist is to **tell the story** in the best way possible.

I'm just curious, are you a self-taught artist or did you go to art school?

I ask because I am a college art student hoping to break into animation and comic books someday.

@Rcinch1 Thanks. I did visual arts at university, but drawing wasn't really the focus there; I did more computer/video/photography stuff there. Drawing comics was something I always did on the side, so I guess a lot of it I developed myself, but I also mentored under Whilce Portacio for 2-3 months in the Philippines, just prior to my first pro work. Whilce really helped me take my work from almost there, to a professional level. Best and most accelerated artistic learning experience I ever had.

Hello David, thanks a lot, your video helps a lot. I see you didn't learned much from school as you said, but from Whilce. Do you have any idea how to get a hold of any artist to get classes from, I really need improvement on inking, ( pencil and brush ). thanks.
