22 December 2006 The artificial sweetener, aspartame, is the bedrock of the diet industry. Found in everything from fizzy drinks to vitamin pills and marketed under a variety of different names, it is difficult to detect and even harder to avoid. But how safe is it? Does it really cause brain tumours, blindness and other serious illnesses? This shocking documentary investigates how the FDA came to approve such a potentially dangerous product.

That this anodyne comment is controversial with a thumbs down betrays how illogical the conclusion is that aspartame is harmful to the general person.
I don't really care about aspartame but the very bad logic, reasoning, and thinking which dominate this documentary and this comment page. That you're thinking emotionally is obvious in your aggressive language and unobjective reporting on both our sides of the discussion (Where does piety come into this? You really have an informed conclusion? You made your comment not to lazily earn "points in cleverness" but to encourage others?)
Maybe you have pathological metabolism, like phenylketonuria. Most people don't have your reaction. With this condition you risk serious brain and body damage.
I just remember the studies I read about aspartame.its quite unhealthy.its all I remember and Im think im right.we should avoid it.look at products that contain aspartame.its all junk food, right?
cont. #2 Oh, and, I notice that when a few weeks ago I accidentally bought sugar free gum with aspartame in it for my daughter and chewed a couple pieces (I don't chew gum much). Me and chemicals have never mixed. My skin has always been sensitive (my fingers get red hot and swell if I touch too many unwashed cloth in stores.) The same sensation was happening on my tongue and throat! They SWELLED up.
It's kinda interesting that there have been correlations with a formaldehyde allergy and what happens to my hands.... formaldehyde is used to make fabrics (and other products) last longer Now think what all these anti-aspartame websites and videos talk about.... It would be an interesting study that definitely won't be done by artifical sweetener companies. ha
A chemist will tell you all matter is chemical. The chemicals of aspartame are found in many common foods: phenylalanine's found in milk, eggs, beef, fish, poulty, nuts, seeds; menthol gives mints their cooling effect; aspartic acid (from which aspartame derives its name) is found in advocado, asparagus, and wild game. Aspartic acid and phenylalanine are both necessary for the human diet, though--like everything--dangerous in excess and to anyone with disorders like phenylketonuria or allergies.
