Boîte à Musique master PART 7142-1, rec. Paris, June 9 1949. André Bellec, Georges Bellec, Yves Robert, and François Soubeyran (voc) with Pierre Philippe (piano). When the four singers first met in 1944, they specialized in folk songs and spirituals. Soon afterwards, however, they met pianist Philippe, and their repertoire changed quite dramatically. "L'entrecôte" was the number they sang at their first ever cabaret performance in 1946, and gradually climbed the ladder to fame. They were proud winners of a "Grand prix du disque" two times and collaborated with such big stars as Edith Piaf and Brigitte Bardot. Pierre Philippe left the group in 1965, but this had no impact on their popularity. They started their farewell tour in 1979, but so great was their success that their last performance did not take place until 1983 when they could look back on a career encompassing literally thousands of performances in 68 countries.
