I'm delighted to welcome you to this conference. And I want to congratulate you on your work to apply the lessons of the Harlem Children's Zone to young people in Hungary's Roma community.
As a New Yorker, I've seen first-hand the benefits of the Harlem Children's Zone Project up close. It has strengthened families; empowered our youth; and fostered a spirit of achievement in the lives of thousands of children. It has also shown us that with hard work and determination, we can overcome legacies of intolerance and build a world in which more children have the opportunity to realize their own God-given potential.
To replicate that progress, we need individuals, organizations, and governments to come together to promote diversity and tolerance. The United States is committed to those universal values. And due in part to our country's own historical experience, we are committed to protecting and promoting the human rights of the Roma.
I have been involved with children's rights issues and the Roma community for many years. And I am delighted to see these issues coming together in such an outstanding example of 21st century partnership.
So, congratulations to the government of Hungary for your leadership of this initiative. I hope you have a very productive conference, and I'll be eager to learn more about what you accomplish.
