Lenny Kohm on Activism and Americanism

Excerpts from a PBS Documentary Series "Visionaries" featuring Appalachian Voices' Campaign Director Lenny Kohm. Lenny is a renowned activist and pioneer of the grassroots effort to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. He was made a chief of the Gwich'in people in 2004 in recognition of his crucial work to protect the Arctic Refuge, also the sacred calving grounds of the Porcupine Caribou herd.

I've never been to Appalachia and until I saw the documentary "Climate of Change," I never heard of mountaintop removal. I was shocked and dismayed to see how the greedy have been allowed to destroy so much of this beautiful region. Thank you, Lenny, for bringing attention to this horrifying practice and working to end it.

thanks countbad, so i will continue to do my best to protect the arctic national wildlife refuge along with trying to bring an end to the practice of mountaintop removal method of coal mining in appalachia. i expect to see great things from your work in the amazonian rainforest.

I think protecting the arctic is a noble idea but shouldn't protecting the Amazon and other rain forests be a much higher priority in terms of environmental activism? No offense but the amount of money and effort spent protecting an area with a low biomass would be much wiser spent protecting the greatest biomass on earth. I would much rather lose the handful of arctic species then lose the rainforest home of tens of thousands.
