This is my 2000 Honda Accord EX V6. My CEL (Check Engine Light) came on and a Code P0401 was indicated meaning a faulty EGR Valve or Clogged EGR Port. I have had my EGR port replaced before. The vehile didn't not respond the same way it had done before when the valve needed replacing. The vehicle didn't perfom noticably different, but it would have failed an Emission test if FL did an emission test, but they don't thankfully. I didn't want the code to stay active if there was a problem. This video follows me through a EGR port cleaning and replacement of both the front and rear Valve Cover Gaskets.

The Honda Dealer wanted to charge me $200 for the Valve Cover Gaskets installed and wanted $325 for the cleaning of the clogged EGR port. Doing the work myself saved $525 in Labor. I purchased my Fel-Pro Valve Cover Gaskets from www.RockAuto.com for $39 shipped for both. They had the best prices and great reviews. This type of repair can easily be made by any novice if they take there time and don't rush things. I no longer have a CEL on and no codes pending. I have a Actron Code Reader which allowed me to erase the codes and reset the CEL to go off myself. 24 hours later, I am still code free with roughly 50 miles traveled today with no tripped codes.

  • The valve cover I believe is around 7.2 lb/ft. You really just want to tighten down on it snugly. It shouldn't leak at that level. Don't tighten to the point where it could snap off.

  • @tuyenn10, Install the throttle body, torque the mounting nuts and bolts to 22 N·m (16 lb-ft). Intake manifold, torque the nuts and bolts to 12 N·m (8.7 lb-ft). Install the IAT sensor; torque it to 18 N·m (13 lb-ft). Install the boost plate; torque the bolts to 12 N·m (8.7 lb-ft).

Install the PCV hose. EGR valve with a new gasket, torque the mounting nuts to 22 N·m (16 lb-ft).

These settings are from Honda's EGR Port Cloging Service Bulletin 99-085.

  • Thanks for the video. My cel just came on and I replaced the egr valve but didnt do the job. I need a egr port cleaning. thanks again dude, now I have an idea on what to look for.

  • @stryderdoo, sorry for the delay. Glad I could help or at least give you a direction to go. Good luck.

  • This is the best video I've found for changing the valve cover gaskets on a v6. Does anybody know a good video for removing the air-intake manifold so that I can access the valve covers?

  • @akenney1979, look at the pt 1 of my 2 videos. I put a link to a video on how to removed the manifold. Very simple to do. Good luck. Thanks for the kinds words about my video.
