"I don't think this is depressing", I think you are seriously misled. The sad part is because his wife and son died, nothing is left as his legacy. No-one remembers his passing, he fades into the darkness without a whisper. That surely is more depressing than any other thing in the world, being completely nothing, without even those you love missing you.
