This is a i7 27" iMac with a Vertex 2 SSD, and now a Blu Ray Drive... It works just fine, and was quite inexpensive. Not the fastest drive out there, at only 2x for BD's, and no burning support for BD. I don't have any need to burn anything besides CD/DVDs anyways. Works just fine... Was actually a tricky install. The bracket needs to be slightly modified to make the disc slide in and out smoothly without getting stuck. It works just dandy now, and plays BD's in windows no problems. Still looking into OS X support, I don't think it exists yet.

It does indeed work, and can be done cheap. I don't see many people with BluRay drives installed interlay in iMac's, so here you go.

(This was shot on a DSLR with a 35mm handheld at close range, so its going to be hunting for focus)

  • Why don't apple have an option to add a blu-ray drive with it?

    Its stupid really.

  • @HU55UN1 The only thing this does in OS X is allow you to play non-HDCP protected BD's, or burn to a BD for archival purposes, if you had a burner. OS X will currently not play Blu Ray discs, so theres no reason for Apple to even have an option for it, since it would make the buyer push for BD support, or install Windows. Both of these probably are not desired. External burners are available for those willing to pay for it.

  • so can you watch blue ray from windows?

  • @alejandroc19 Yep. You need to fiddle with the drivers to get HDCP to work with the mobility radeon 4850, but it does play blu ray movies just fine. I need to find a way to get it to work in OS X, possibly even if its in a VM...

  • What software do you use to playback and is there a faster drive that could be installed instead? Thanks!

  • @martin1976 Yes, there are quite a few drives that would fit in the iMac, and are comparable or faster than the stock drive... However, theyre about $300-500, and I don't really use the optical drive anyways. And as far as I know, there is currently no way to play BD movies in OS X, you need to run Windows and pick one of the several programs for it.

  • @ericspda Alright, thnx 4 the reply, im thinking of getting an iMac 27 should I get i5 or i7 and what is hyperthreading? What benefit will i7 give me over i5?

Lso it will have 2TB hard drive, 16GB RAM, Radeon 2GB grapchics card.

  • @abhijeetsibartie Indeed. It was a D3100 with the 35mm f1.8 AF-S. The contrast-based in video AF isnt very good in poorly lit environments. It works better in bright areas, but still nothing amazing.

  • @coledude062 It was a DSLR. The video quality is fairly good given the lighting, but the contrast based autofocus is the main issue here. If I was manually focusing it, there would be no AF motor noise. This, of course requires two hands.

  • and now with this drive u can watch Blu-ray Movies on OS X with Mac Blu-ray Player! ;)

  • you were using a dslr to record the video
