Getting restaurants wired with OpenTable

I find I'm often using a mobile app called Siri—a smart app that acts as a personal assistant, answering queries like "Where can I get dim sum around here?" and "Get me a taxi." For that first question, Siri uses the results from one of its partners, OpenTable.

Most of us have probably used OpenTable at least once...to snag the last table at a favorite sushi place, for instance. But finding an open table at a busy restaurant is just one part of the OpenTable universe. Restaurants use OpenTable's hardware and software to keep track of all their reservations (online, phone, and walk-in) and check in arriving diners, and are also provided a guest database and table management tools.

The folks at OpenTable are busy building powerful apps for six different platforms (so far)—and striving to provide all the features users are accustomed to online, as well as super-features that make the most of location-based technology. And the apps seem to be working. "We've seated 3 million diners in restaurants through our apps," says Scott Jampol, OpenTable's Senior Director of Consumer Marketing. "It's not like we're playing around anymore. This is a real amount of value being driven to restaurants through mobile."
