  • Happy B-day and many more.

  • Yes, that is true. Each part of the song references these different bands. What you are missing though is the big picture. The point of the song is that these bands represent the death of music. That is why he included them. McLean believes that good, God fearing rock-n-roll died with Buddy Holly.

  • i've taken a course at school in which we analyzed every part of this song. helter skelter is the rolling stones.. no angel born in hell is hells angels. bad news at the doorstep was a plane crash that killed three people. jack flash jumped over a candle stick is another rolling stones song. the "birds flew off" is about the byrds.. thats just the ones i remember from the top of my head dude

  • Nope. The music died after Buddy Holly died, according to McLean. Everything since is crap.

  • no... you're both completely wrong. most of it is about the death of someone that i can't remember in a plain crash. also about the murder by Hells Angels at the Rolling Stones Concert and also there are alliterations to song titles and lyrics from songs at the time... its not negative to the actual music at the time at all

  • No, its about the McLean's view that music after Buddy Holly, Richie Valley, and Big Booper was crappy and somewhat Godless. Basically he's saying that all music after the 50's is a bad influence on society.

  • the song is about the Veitnam War

  • really really good song
