@echoThreeGolf ok thanks. what are scout snipers doing in Afghanistan? I have a pretty good idea of what they were doing in Iraq, just from reading books. i personally think theyre a great counterinsurgency tool because they find the bad guys and learn the lay of the land, and act precisely.
@marleynrs8 speaking only from observations i've made in LAR, you could definitely be attending pre-sniper and eventually sniper school at or around your two year mark. you've got a deployment under your belt, you've picked up Corporal, your PFT and rifle quals are excellent etc.. your platoon Sgt. will throw your name in the mix when those school seats open. transferring to some STA unit I believe happens no sooner than at time of your first re-enlistment.
@echoThreeGolf ok thanks. i dont think it will be too flexible in the near future, some guys can't even get infantry spots right now, so alot are taking artillery. anyways, it will be a couple more yrs for me so things will change. oh, and how long does it take to get a spot in Sniper School and go to an STA platoon. 2 years or so? i know some LCPLs have pulled it off. does LAR have STA's?
@marleynrs8 LAR is a specialized component within the conventional USMC infantry fighting force. Force/Bn. Recon is the USMC's contribution to our country's special operations community. If this interests you, i suggest focusing on becoming an 0311 first. u don't want to talk about it as if you can simply walk on, because you cannot. i have a very hight opinion of our Force/Bn. Recon units.
@marleynrs8 you could apply that to any branch of the military. it's just a fact that not all young adults are ready for the huge responsibility or the culture shock. i enlisted at 28 so I was a bit better prepared. In SOI, if the numbers and requirements of the MC are flexible, the command will pass on that flexibility to the students via 'wish lists' etc. again though, there is no way to accurately predict what your situation will be. this stuff is not static.
@echoThreeGolf so then, whats the real difference between you guys and Recon other than the LAV's. that sounds basically like you're Recon with light armor? how do you remain unseen with those large vehicles? also, what's your opinion on Recon, should I skip Infantry to Recon if i decide i want to?
@echoThreeGolf the reason i asked about moto was because i read somewhere that what happens is guys join infantry cause they think it will be cool and fun, but when they decide they dont like it all they become a shitbird and lower quality of their unit. but, during SOI, is there a "dream sheet" of sorts to apply for available units? this happened to one LAR guy I talked to.
@chadhertz cool man thanks. thats insane though most snipers dont go to school like ever, or at least not until they pick up sgt or something.
