If you have ever been involved in a Network marketing business (MLM) then you will surely be familiar with the traditional method of building the business. When you first start out as a distributor for your new MLM Company you are told to make a list of all your family and friends then systematically pitch your business to each and every one of them.

The theory is that your family and friends already "Know, like and trust" you therefore it will make it easier to pitch a business and they will be more receptive, but is this really true?

Well there are a few factors to take into consideration

1. Especially if you are new to business and MLM your family may not know you as the "business person", they know you away from your working environment, maybe they think you're funny or dull, sarcastic, shy or outgoing and it may be difficult for them to see you out with that personal knowledge. This may mean they do not take you seriously.

2. If you do not have the correct training many newbie's tend to over pitch their new found business and scare people off. So a word of advice, don't pitch your business / product at the family wedding - The last thing you want is your family and friends avoiding you!

Many new distributors are likely to get disheartened and often quit if they do not see results within their first 30 days.

You would be shocked at some of the stories I have heard from many of my friends and teams within the Industry regarding their friends and family. 90% of the time this is actually the most difficult people to recruit. What's more if you need to twist their arms to join then they will never make a real go of it and this is not the type of person that you want on your team anyway.

Now don't get me wrong you may find a few people who are receptive and happy to get involved even just to help you out you may have an exceptional talent for sales or have an exceptionally helpful family / friend group but on the whole it is a difficult target market. I still have family who think I'm just trying to make a buck out of them, which hurts, but you need to develop a thick skin.
So the question remains: Should you or shouldn't you pitch your business / product to your friends and family? Well...

Personally I would take the soft approach and simply make them aware of what I'm doing without any pitch and as they start to see success the ones who are interested will approach you with a new found respect!

On the other hand, when I started in my first MLM and spoke to my warm market, OH Boy, did I learn fast, I have never dealt with such a difficult and awkward group of people in my life (and I hear so many stories just the same), the pro to this is that after you have every question and rejection known to man thrown at you from your warm market you will have learnt a lot and be all the more ready to face the big wide world. The lesson here is, if you want to be successful you need to stick at it, don't be discouraged easily even from those closest to you.

To be successful you will need to work hard, never stop learning (really, learn how to be successful from those who have been there and done it) and I would highly recommend leveraging your efforts. Internet Marketing is a great way to reach the masses and leverage your efforts to increase your results but it's important that you get it right! • @Taxi502 thats ashame you feel like that, i think you may also have misunderstood the content of the video and domeage's comment. MLM is a great and viable business model, the problem is many who get involved in MLM do not know how to do it correctly and do not go to the effort to learn. You should not be blindly pitching business to anyone including family and friends. With that being said, if you are with a good MLM company the services may be of benefit to all including friends and family

  • man igot to love u :)

  • Sensible advice - friends & family can be the most cynical so, whilst I agree that their objections can help me improve how I explain what I do, I value their love & support enough not to risk losing them through pitching my business.

  • @Domeage i agree absolutely. most businesses have thousands of types of people working for them. there r only 2 types of people in mlm. those who cherish their friends and family n quit mlm immediately after they start n realize the reality of what theyre doing. and then there r those who r so self involved n wanna make a buck at anyone's expense. they lie cheat and steal from their own families and friends. this second type of people r mlmarketers.

  • all good info. You don't want to join the NFL... No Friends Left or No Family Left... Just stick to real marketing and if they ask you can tell your friends or family what you are doing but mention it in passing, not as if you want to recruit them! Follow that up with questions about what they are doing at their jobs and smile a lot; more than that and you might not be invited to Bar-B-Q s or family outings!
