Well, that's only half true: Coppola believed in him alot. At least during the Zoetrope years.
Don't forget that he had been chosen to direct "Apocalypse Now".
However it's certainly true that nobody believed in Star Wars during its filming. Harrison Ford famously said, rearding the script: "you can write this shit, but you can't say it!"

I am film maker, And Mr Lucas (unbeknownst to him) is my Idol.
He was the ultimate underdog early in his career, even after the success of American Graffiti, only producer Alan Ladd Jr. believed in George. The cast and crew on the set of Star wars laughed at him, They called the film a silly kids movie and taunted him on the set. he actually ended up in the hospital due to all the stress
I guess it just go's to prove that people try to destroy what they don't under stand
