Tommy Faile sings Nine Pound Hammer with Pappy Sherrill and the Hired Hands. 80 year old Snuffy Jenkins was there with the Hired Hands at this show in 1989, but did not play on this song. Tommy Faile was a member of the Hired Hands in the late 1940s when they were known as Byron Parker's Hillbillies. Snuffy and Pappy were together for over 50 years. Snuffy is a bluegrass legend and is credited as the originator of the 3 finger style of picking that was popularized by Earl Scruggs, Don Reno, and others who came after him during the birth of bluegrass music in the 1940s.

  • ltc92 Tommy Faile wrote the super big truck driving song "Phantom 309", I think it was Red Sovine had the big hit, never heard Tommy do it. I grrew up watching Tommy on the early morning Arthur Smith show on WBTV, Charlotte. Don Reno was also with The Hired Hands before moving to Arthur Smith for a while, then he teamed up with Red Smiley and moved off to Virginia. All This was in late 40's and early 50's .........

  • I have an autographed copy of Tommy Faile's Brown Mountain Light.

  • does anybody have his version of The Ballad of the Brown Mountain Light???? please post

  • I believe that Sherrills Ford, N.C. was named after him.

  • Tommy Faile was not only a good singer, but a really nice guy, too. "Brown Mountain Lights" has to be one of his best. Tommy should have had more exposure. He was definitely talented...gone but not forgotten.

  • Hey pretty good! I've heard alot about this group but never had the chance to heat them. That Snuffy does alright on that banjo!
