It downloaded a compressed file of the .exe, like a .zip file but self-extracting.

@dBekuFcrub999 Regardless of whether or not you are using a mic, having the lame encoder will enable you to export as an .mp3 file.

@dBekuFcrub999 If the lame encoder isn't enabled when you try to export to .mp3, it'll ask you to find it. Find it for the program (download if you haven't) and then once it has been located, you should be all set.

does the beta audacity works better than the stable version?

Usually the stable versions are more reliable, but may not have the latest features included in the beta.
