The rest stroke starts when the tip of a more extended right hand finger is placed on the string. Feeling the tension of the string the finger then pushes down and in causing the finger to "rest" onto the adjacent string. Be sure to allow the finger to bounce off the lower string after its completion to be certain the finger is relaxed.
The free stroke stroke starts with a more curved finger and as the tip of the finger is placed on the string it strikes it gliding "freely" over the adjacent string.
Rest strokes are the more powerful, fuller sounding, and stronger tones created on the guitar. They are used for single notes, emphasis, and culminating climactic points in phrases. Free strokes are used for chords, arpeggios, or when a lighter, more legato touch is desired.
