Tying a one handed munter hitch directly on the carabiner, from a hanging rope. While the carabiner is still open, clip it to your harness. The load strand (the one going up) should be against the spine of the carabiner, and the brake strand should exit out the back of the carabiner. The spine should be on same side as your brake hand. (I'm right handed, obviously)

These were shot with a terrible digital camera, but I think they get the technique across.
