In this jewelry tutorial I will show you how to sand your jewelry using two methods; by hand and with a sanding disk attached to a flex shaft.
NOTE: 1 - I've just discovered, via a well informed viewer, that red rouge is not wax based, as I was taught, but fat based. Two of those fatty ingredients are: Tallow Glyceride and Triglycerides (animal fat). This explains why it comes off in hot soapy water! Cool.
NOTE 2:
Since publishing these videos, I've found different discs to use. Please check out my website, http://www.nancylthamilton.com/techniques/sanding/ for more information about the products discussed in this video

Thank you so much. Now I understand why I can't get the sandpaper scratches out (need sandpaper with an even higher grit). I'm taking a jewelry making class in college right now and the only advice my instructor would give me is to keep sanding. I was sanding forever until my fingers bled (literally). So now I know I'm not doing anything wrong (and also my instructor is crazy). Thank you!

Oh my, so sorry to hear about your poor fingers and your teacher. Blechhh....Glad I saved you from a life without fingertips. Thanks for taking the time to write and good luck in your class! N

Hello,
Would you recommend this same method to smooth and finish sterling silver fused joins?
Love the videos!

Hi gmrgrl2600, Yes, I use both hand sanding and sanding disks to finish my soldered silver, gold, brass, bronze and copper pieces. I also use 3M's radial bristle discs and silicone polishers depending of what needs to be finished and what type of access/area I have to clean up. The sanding discs go from very rough 220 grit to 1200 grit so, you can finish up to mirror polish. Thanks for watching! Nancy
